What is Genre?

GENRE

Genre is a category of which a movie is put into with regards to the theme and tone of the film.

It helps the audience gather an understanding of what the film will be about for example, if it is a romance, it will be about love and will most likely be light-hearted. It helps the institution because it gives them guidelines to follow when making a movie and helps them target specific audiences.

A sub genre is a category within a genre for example a psychological thriller is a sub genre of a thriller. They exist because a sub genre can not be a genre on its own as there would not be enough films to put under it.

a Hybrid genre is two main genres put together for example a romantic comedy. Hybrid genres exist because when you put two genres together, it attracts a wider audience as people who are interested in romance will watch a rom com and people interested in comedy will still watch a rom com. This, overall makes more money for the institution than if it were a single genre.

I associate the tone of a film, the storyline of a film and the themes of a film with genre.
